The applications provide a free “alternative” to subscription-based video streaming services such as Netflix. Popcorn Time uses sequential downloading to stream video listed by several torrent websites, and third party trackers can also be added manually.

Popcorntime advertises their own VPN inside the app itself. So be aware of that. You can disable it from settings-advance. But they want your currency and this is a slippery slope. Except that what they provide is a decentralized content that is trade-free for anyone.
